Before you know it, summer will be here, and the family will be ready for trips to the coast, the mountains, and anywhere between. Now is the time to get your dog used to being calm on a leash in public. If you feel like your dog is too hyper or nervous even to take a walk around the neighborhood, start small and take 20 – 30 minutes to walk to the mailbox. That’s right, 20 minutes to get the mail. This involves:
- Leashing your dog
- Sit Stay while opening the door
- Not allowing your dog to walk out the door until you release them or invite them outside
- Taking the time to walk and not get dragged to the mailbox. If you have to, stop and have your dog Stay right next to you, or make U-turns every time they pull.
- Sit Stay while you get the mail.
- Repeat Step 4 on the way home
- Repeat Step 2
- Don’t allow your dog to go inside until you release them or invite them to go inside
